DIRECTOR Dr. N.Narayanan Nair

Dr. Narayanan Nair is a founder member of the Academy and has been its Principal from 1969 to 1988 and from 1988 onwards, he is serving as its Director. He took his B.L Degree from the Government Law College, Ernakulam in 1953 and LLM and Phd in law from the University of Kerala. He is the first Phd in law from the University of Kerala. He holds the record for being the longest serving Syndicate Member as well as Senate Member of the University of Kerala in the history of the University. He is a member of Senate of the University of Kerala continuously since 1963 without interruption. He is also a member of the Bar Council of Kerala continuously since 1990 and has been serving as the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Bar Council of Kerala for the past 15 years and has been instrumental in establishing the National University of Advanced Legal Studies and Research (NUALS), Kochi. His strenuous and untiring efforts are behind the NUALS Act, its realization and its development. He has been the Executive Council member of NUALS since its inception and has served as Vice-Chancellor of NUALS for a period of one and a half years from 01.06.2007 to 31.12.2008. He is also the Managing Trustee of the Bar Council of Kerala Trust.

He has a strong socialist background as he was an active member and leader of the Communist Party of India and his life style reflects the same. He initially started a teaching career in the Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram, where his students included Justice (Retired) C.S.Rajan and Justice (Retired) Sreedevi, (Retired Judges of the Kerala High Court) and Shri. P. Gopalakrishnan Nair, Senior lawyer at the Kerala High Court.

He has also served as member of the Board of Examiners, Academic Council, Board of studies, Faculty Board and Pass Board of various Universities and as guide who has produced Phds. He also served in the Examination Boards for evaluation and grant of Phds and in the paper setting Board for Civil Service Examinations. His expertise is in service law and his treatise “Civil Servant under the Law and Constitution”, is much acclaimed as a masterpiece in the field of law relating to Civil servants. He has several publications to his credit. He has visited several foreign countries like England, erstwhile Soviet Union (now Russia), Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Yugosolavia, Sweden, Norway for academic conferences and official purposes.
